March 13th, 2010: EBAM - EBAM

Normally we would not fly today, with such a low ceiling. But after checking some good weather sites, we learned ceiling was at a 'generous' 2300ft and there would be no rain nearby our field. On top of that, visibility was really good, especially compared to the last months.

As there still was a risk for rain showers elsewhere, we decided to do circuit flying and train our landing skills. It must have been 2 years since we did circuit training, part of the conversion training for the VL-3. Not something to be proud of. As for every flight we turn the prop and check for the oil level of the Rotax 912S.

Unfortunately the circuit was packed with ohter training aircraft so we went for some local flying. We normally cruise at a very economical 170km/h @ 8l/h but now and then we release the horses! Dynon tells us 244km/h and this with a very dirty aircraft.

At these speeds, Belgian airspace becomes pretty small. After a quick visit to the wider Ghent area we go back to try again for some touch and go's. Here we are overhead the 40Ha Donkmeer in Oudenaarde, the homebase for the Absolut Windsurf Club.

We ended up with 5 circuits and honestly, the added value is questionable. The VL-3 has such superior slow flying caracteristic that you put the aircraft down wherever you want. Once you activate the 55° full carbon split flaps, the VL-3 is really committed to land!

On the picture you see the new SkyLane microlight taking-off on RWY29 while we prepare OO-G05 to be hangared again.
